Still a very solid read and one I look forward to my spawn to reading.Kiran Millwood Hargrave is an award winning poet, playwright, and novelist. Overall 4/5 cups of coffee, I really enjoyed this book and I am a huge fan of Hargrave but this wasn’t quite my fave of her MG books.

The MC is great, Mila wants to protect her family and she’ll stop at nothing and she’s willing to accept the ‘impossible’ when the adults can’t to make sure she brings her family back together. It wasn’t my favorite ending and also the Father’s role in this was maybe glossed over considering the weight of his actions. I also felt that the ending with the resolution almost felt random.

The pacing felt a little off mostly because the part before the journey seemed almost too long in comparison of the journey itself which flew by. This isn’t one that’s too dark by any means either. Now as a mom I still enjoy letting my child experience more things in the world through the safety of books. I wanted to experience things that weren’t always happy or sad from the safety of my couch or bed while going on the adventure with the MC. I remember as a kid (waaaay waaaaay back) always enjoying books that didn’t coddle me. – GoodReadsĪ middle grade book that encourages younger readers to dive into a darker fantasy. Mila and her sisters live with their brother Oskar in a small forest cabin in the snow.
